The direct answer
Do not surprise your parents with a hearing aid. A hearing aid has to be prescribed from a hearing test and fitted to their ears, and it only works if they want to wear it. The best gift is an appointment: a hearing test taken together, then aids chosen with them if needed. It shows care without making anyone feel that something is wrong with them.
Parent has a CGHS card? Don't buy on Dhanteras: start by mid-October
If your mother or father is a central-government pensioner with a CGHS card, CGHS can reimburse up to ₹30,000 per ear under the rules issued on 9 September 2026. A clinically justified both-ear fitting can be reimbursed up to ₹60,000. The catch is the order: permission must come before the purchase.
A hearing aid bought on Dhanteras and claimed afterwards is likely to be rejected. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Counting back from those dates:
- By about 12 October: visit the CGHS Wellness Centre and get referred to an ENT specialist.
- By about 19 October: finish the ENT assessment and audiogram, which usually take 2 to 7 days.
- By about 2 November: have prior permission approved. This usually takes 1 to 3 weeks, so start earlier if you can.
- Before 6–8 November: buy the approved aid, then have it fitted and fine-tuned.
The aid itself also has to qualify. The 2026 rules cover only aids that are programmable and rechargeable, with at least 8 channels, the charger in the box and a three-year comprehensive warranty. - Make the gift the appointment. A free hearing test gives your parent the audiogram the ENT and the permission file need, and it is the right first step either way.
- Siblings can share the difference. If your parent picks an aid above the ceiling, CGHS pays up to ₹30,000 per ear and the family covers the rest.
- Serving employees get permission from their Head of Department instead of the CGHS zonal office. Armed Forces veterans (ECHS) and Railway staff (RELHS) follow their own schemes.

Why a surprise gift often fails
- It cannot be programmed correctly without the person's own hearing test.
- A parent who feels pushed may leave it in a drawer.
- Hearing loss can carry stigma, and a surprise can feel like criticism.
- The style, comfort and features need to suit them and their habits.
A better way to give it
- Start with the test, not the device. Offer a hearing test as a gift, framed as looking after their health like a BP or sugar check.
- Go together. Attend the appointment so they feel supported, and so you hear the audiologist's explanation.
- Let them choose. Show them the options, including small, discreet and rechargeable styles, and let them try them.

- Talk about a specific situation, such as missing family conversations or the TV volume, not about 'your hearing'.
- Use 'we' language, and offer to get your own check done too.
