Behind-the-ear (BTE) and receiver-in-canal (RIC) sit over the ear and suit most losses, including stronger ones. In-the-ear styles (ITE, ITC, CIC and the near-invisible IIC) sit inside the ear and appeal to parents who want them hidden. Smaller is not automatically better: tiny aids are fiddly for older fingers, hold smaller batteries, and cannot power severe loss.
