Educational information, not medical advice. This article is written to help you understand common ear and hearing issues. It is not a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment. If your symptoms are severe, sudden, or persistent, please consult a qualified doctor or audiologist. For urgent symptoms — sudden hearing loss, bleeding from the ear, severe pain with dizziness, or a head injury — seek medical care the same day.

Can hearing be improved naturally? An honest India guide: what never works, which causes are truly reversible, and the one red flag you must not ignore.

Here is the honest answer, right at the start: if the hearing loss is sensorineural — damage inside the inner ear — nothing natural will bring it back. No supplement, no oil, no yoga posture, no diet, no mobile app, no ear exercise. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something. But that is only half the story, and the other half is genuinely hopeful. Some causes of reduced hearing are completely reversible, and they are common in India: ear wax, infection, fluid behind the eardrum, a blocked eustachian tube after a cold, and certain medicines. The problem is you cannot tell which type you have by guessing. A test can. That is the real "natural remedy" — finding out what you are actually dealing with before you waste months on remedies that were never going to work.

Why most adult hearing loss cannot be reversed

Inside your cochlea, deep in the inner ear, there are thousands of microscopic hair cells. They convert sound vibration into nerve signals. Age, loud noise, some illnesses and some medicines damage them.

In humans, those hair cells do not grow back. Once they are gone, they are gone. This is not pessimism; it is simply how the human ear is built. It is the same reason a scar does not become unscarred skin.

This type is called sensorineural hearing loss, and it is by far the most common kind in adults. Age-related loss, or presbycusis, and noise-related loss both fall into this group. If you want to understand the different types properly, our guide to types and causes of hearing loss explains it in plain language.

"A hearing aid does not repair the ear. It makes speech reach whatever hearing you still have. That is management, not cure — and it is still life-changing."

The hopeful part: hearing loss that really can be reversed

Not all reduced hearing is inner-ear damage. Some of it is a mechanical or medical problem sitting in front of the inner ear, and those problems are often fixable.

  • Impacted ear wax. Extremely common, and often the entire reason someone feels blocked or muffled. Removed properly, hearing usually improves the same day — though if there is age-related loss underneath, clearing the wax reveals it rather than fixes it.
  • Middle ear infection. Otitis media can dull hearing while it is active. Treated properly by a doctor, hearing usually recovers.
  • Fluid behind the eardrum (glue ear). Very common in children, and possible in adults too. It muffles sound until it clears or is treated.
  • Eustachian tube blockage after a cold or a flight. That heavy, underwater feeling. Usually settles, sometimes needs treatment — see eustachian tube dysfunction.
  • Perforated eardrum. Many small perforations heal on their own; some need an ENT's attention.
  • Ototoxic medicines. High-dose aspirin, quinine and certain diuretics can dull hearing in a way that often recovers once the drug is stopped or changed. Damage from aminoglycoside antibiotics and platinum-based chemotherapy such as cisplatin is usually permanent — stopping the drug protects what is left rather than bringing hearing back. Only your doctor can judge which applies to you.

One warning on that last point: never stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Some of these drugs are treating something far more serious than hearing. Take the list to your doctor and ask whether an alternative exists. Our page on ototoxicity and medicines that affect hearing is worth reading before that conversation.

One thing that is an emergency: sudden loss in one ear

If hearing drops in one ear over hours or a couple of days — you wake up and one side is dead, or the phone suddenly sounds distant on one side — that is a medical emergency.

See an ENT within 24 to 72 hours. Not next week. Steroid treatment started quickly can sometimes restore hearing in these cases, and the chance of recovery falls the longer you wait. If it has already been more than three days, still go — treatment can still help beyond that window, and sudden one-sided loss needs investigating whatever the delay. Late is far better than never. Hearing that is clearly worse in one ear, or ringing in one ear only, should also be checked by an ENT even if it came on slowly.

Please do not spend those days trying oils or waiting for it to "open up on its own". This is the one situation where days genuinely matter. Read more in our guide to sudden and noise-induced hearing loss. The same urgency applies to ear pain with discharge, sudden severe dizziness, or hearing loss after a head injury — all of those need a doctor, not a home remedy.

About mustard oil, garlic oil and the rest

Almost every Indian household has this advice: warm mustard oil, garlic boiled in oil, onion juice, a few drops at bedtime. It is given with love. It is still not safe.

  • Mustard oil, garlic oil and onion juice are not wax-softening drops. They are not sterile, not made for the ear canal, and can swell a plug or irritate the skin. Plain olive oil or a pharmacy wax-softening drop is a different thing — those are recognised softeners, but only when there is no ear pain, no discharge and no known or suspected hole in the eardrum, and even then they will not shift a hard impacted plug.
  • Warm, damp, oily ear canals grow fungus. Otomycosis is a real and unpleasant condition, and India's humid months make it worse. See ear fungus and otomycosis.
  • If the eardrum is perforated, anything you pour in reaches the middle ear. You cannot see your own eardrum. That alone is reason enough not to pour anything.
  • Cotton buds push wax deeper and scratch the canal lining. They remove the wax you can see and compact the rest.
  • Ear candling does not work. The "wax" in the candle is candle residue. It also carries a burn risk.
  • Onion and garlic juice are acidic and irritating to a delicate canal. Sensation of relief is not the same as improvement.

If your ears feel itchy or blocked, read how to clean ears safely at home and, for wax that has genuinely built up, microsuction versus syringing. Wax removal is a five-minute professional job. It is not a home project.

Do hearing exercises and brain-training apps work?

This deserves an accurate answer rather than a yes or a no.

No app, listening exercise or "sound therapy" regains damaged hair cells. Your audiogram will not improve because you practised on your phone. Anything advertised as "restore your hearing in 21 days" is false.

But auditory training — deliberately practising listening — can help your brain use the hearing you still have more efficiently. This matters most for new hearing aid users, whose brains are relearning sounds they had stopped receiving. It helps with clarity in noise, following conversation, and adjusting faster. It improves the use of hearing, not the hearing itself. That distinction is the whole point.

The genuinely useful "natural" list

Here is what actually protects and supports hearing. It is less exciting than a miracle oil, and far more effective.

  • Protect what you still have. Loud noise damage is permanent and cumulative. Use ear protection around generators, machinery, drilling, loud weddings and DJ systems. Keep earphone volume moderate.
  • Get wax removed professionally, not at home, and only when it is actually blocking.
  • Control diabetes and blood pressure. Both are linked with hearing loss. The inner ear depends on a tiny, fragile blood supply.
  • Stop smoking. It is associated with poorer hearing outcomes, along with everything else it does.
  • Treat ear infections promptly rather than waiting them out.
  • Review your medicines with your doctor if you take long-term drugs known to affect hearing.
  • Get tested instead of guessing. Early identification changes what options you have.
  • Take untreated hearing loss seriously. There is a well-established association between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline — one more reason not to postpone. See the hearing loss and dementia link.

The single most useful natural step

A hearing test tells you which category you are in. That is the whole decision.

If it is wax, an infection, fluid or a blocked eustachian tube, you may be treatable and back to normal. If it is sensorineural, you stop chasing cures and start managing it well — which today means discreet, well-fitted hearing aids that make conversation much easier to follow for most people. A pure tone audiometry test takes under an hour and answers the question that months of home remedies never will.

At Prudent Hearing Solutions, our RCI-registered audiologists have been doing exactly this since 2004, at Viman Nagar in Pune, Rohini and Green Park in Delhi, and Jayanagar in Bengaluru. The 45-minute hearing test is free. If the cause looks medical or surgical, we will tell you to see an ENT — we would rather send you to the right person than sell you the wrong thing. If a hearing aid is the answer, you can trial one before buying, hearing aids are GST-exempt in India, and 0% EMI is available. See pricing or book a hearing test. You can also call us on +91 9429690093.

Find out what you have. That is the honest place to start.

Frequently asked questions

Can any medicine, supplement or oil reverse sensorineural hearing loss?

No. In sensorineural hearing loss, the hair cells inside the cochlea are damaged, and in humans these cells do not regenerate. No supplement, ayurvedic oil, vitamin, diet, exercise or app restores them. Products claiming to do this are not backed by evidence. What can be done is to protect the hearing you still have and manage the loss well, usually with properly fitted hearing aids.

Is putting mustard oil or garlic oil in the ear safe?

No. It is common advice in India but it is not safe. These are not wax-softening drops — they are not sterile, not made for the ear canal, and can swell a plug or irritate the skin (plain olive oil or a pharmacy softening drop is a different thing, and only when there is no pain, discharge or perforation), the warm damp canal encourages fungal infection (otomycosis), and if your eardrum has a perforation the oil reaches the middle ear. You cannot see your own eardrum, so you cannot know it is intact. Do not put oil, onion juice, garlic juice or drops into the ear without an audiologist or ENT checking it first.

My hearing dropped suddenly in one ear. What should I do?

Treat it as an emergency. Sudden hearing loss in one ear over hours or a few days needs an ENT within 24 to 72 hours. Steroid treatment started quickly can sometimes restore hearing, and the chance of recovery drops the longer you wait. If more than three days have already passed, go anyway — late is far better than never. Do not try home remedies, and do not wait to see if it clears on its own.

Which types of hearing loss can actually be cured?

Reduced hearing caused by impacted ear wax, a middle ear infection, fluid behind the eardrum, eustachian tube blockage after a cold or flight, and some medicine-related effects can often be reversed with proper treatment. These are worth checking precisely because they are fixable. A hearing test plus an ear examination tells you whether your loss falls into this reversible group or the permanent sensorineural group.

Do hearing exercises or ear training apps improve hearing?

They do not restore damaged hearing and will not improve your audiogram. However, auditory training can help your brain make better use of the hearing you still have, particularly for new hearing aid users adjusting to sounds they had stopped receiving. It improves listening skill and comprehension in noise, not the ear itself. Any app promising to restore hearing is making a false claim.

Should I stop a medicine if I think it is affecting my hearing?

Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Some medicines known to affect hearing are treating conditions far more serious than hearing loss. Make a list of everything you take, including long-term medicines, and discuss it with the prescribing doctor. They can decide whether an alternative or a dose change is safe. An audiologist can document any change in your hearing to support that discussion.
