Sweat and humidity are among the biggest causes of hearing aid failure in India. You can wear aids for light exercise with protection, but wipe them, use a sweatband or cover, dry them nightly and choose a water-resistant model. Remove them for swimming and very heavy sweating.
The direct answer
Sweat is salty and moist, and over time it corrodes the electronics and blocks the microphone and speaker openings of hearing aids. You can usually wear aids for walking, yoga or light gym work if you protect them, but you should wipe and dry them after every session, and take them off for swimming or very heavy, dripping sweat.
Why sweat is a problem
- Moisture and salt can corrode battery contacts and circuit boards.
- Sweat can block microphone ports and speaker outputs, muffling sound.
- Humidity encourages wax and skin debris to stick.
- Repeated damp can shorten the life of the device. See how long hearing aids last.
Protect your aids while exercising
- Choose a water-resistant model if you exercise often. See waterproof IP68 hearing aids in India. Water-resistant does not mean waterproof for swimming.
- Use a sweatband or hearing aid cover over or around the aids.
- Wear a headband or cap to keep sweat from running toward the ear.
- Wipe them straight after with a soft dry cloth, and clear the ports with the brush from your kit.
- Keep spares and a case in your bag.
Dry them every night
- Open the battery door fully, or remove the batteries.
- Use a dry-aid box or dehumidifier with drying capsules or a UV dryer, especially in monsoon and summer. See hearing aid care in the monsoon.
- Do not use a hairdryer, oven or direct sun, which can damage the aids.
When to take them off
- Swimming, showering and water sports.
- Heavy, dripping sweat, for instance in a hot yoga class or long runs in summer.
- Contact sports where a knock could damage them.
If they stop working after getting wet
- Switch off, open the battery door, remove the batteries and wipe dry.
- Leave them in a drying box for several hours, not in rice.
- If they are still faulty, book a service. See hearing aid repair and servicing and hearing aid not working.
