Educational information, not medical advice. This article is written to help you understand common ear and hearing issues. It is not a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment. If your symptoms are severe, sudden, or persistent, please consult a qualified doctor or audiologist. For urgent symptoms (sudden hearing loss, bleeding from the ear, severe pain with dizziness, or a head injury), seek medical care the same day.
If your hearing aid will not pair or keeps disconnecting, restart the aids, turn Bluetooth off and on, forget the pairing and set it up again, update the app and phone, and check compatibility. On Android, battery-saving and permissions settings are a common hidden cause.
The quick fix
Most pairing problems are fixed by restarting the hearing aids, turning the phone's Bluetooth off and on, removing the old pairing, and pairing again. If it still fails, update the hearing aid app and the phone software, and check that your phone and hearing aid model are compatible. Android battery-saving settings are a frequent hidden cause.
10 fixes, in order
- 1. Restart the hearing aids. Open and close the battery door, or put them in the charger for a few seconds and take them out.
- 2. Turn Bluetooth off and on on your phone, and try flight mode on and off.
- 3. Restart your phone.
- 4. Forget the device and re-pair. Remove the hearing aids from your phone's Bluetooth list, restart the aids in pairing mode, and pair again. On iPhone, use Settings, Accessibility, Hearing Devices.
- 5. Update the hearing aid app and your phone's operating system.
- 6. Check permissions. Allow Bluetooth, nearby devices and, on many Android phones, location, for the hearing aid app.
- 7. Turn off battery optimisation for the hearing aid app on Android, so the phone does not put it to sleep. Also allow it to run in the background.
- 8. Check the battery and charge. Weak batteries and low charge cause dropouts. Try fresh batteries or a full charge.
- 9. Reduce interference and distance. Keep the phone within a few metres, and away from crowded Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices when testing.
- 10. Check compatibility. Not every hearing aid streams directly to every phone. See Bluetooth hearing aids in India.
Android and iPhone differences
- iPhone: many aids use Made for iPhone pairing that runs through the phone's Accessibility settings.
- Android: direct streaming depends on the phone and the hearing aid platform, and some models use an app or a small streamer instead. See Signia hearing aids and phone app connectivity.
When streaming is the problem, not pairing
- Audio stutters or cuts out: move closer, check for interference, and update the app.
- Calls work but music does not: check the phone's audio output settings.
- Only one aid connects: restart both, and re-pair.
- Volume too low or high: adjust in the app. See how to control hearing aid volume and programs.
When to contact us
If none of this works, the hearing aid firmware may need an update or the aid may need a check in the clinic. Bring your phone along so we can test the connection on the actual handset. See our hearing aid repair and servicing guide, or ask about a home visit. If you are choosing new aids, a free hearing test and fitting consultation includes a compatibility check with your phone.
