Yes, you can arrange a hearing test for a parent in Goa while you live in Mumbai, Pune, the Gulf or further away. Send us a WhatsApp message with their town or village. Goa's parents, grown-up children elsewhere

Goa has long had one of India's oldest populations. In the 2011 Census, 11.2% of Goans were aged 60 or over, second only to Kerala (12.6%) and well above the national 8.6%. It's also common for Goan families to have children working in another city or another country. That combination means many parents are managing hearing loss on their own, and the first person to notice it is often a son or daughter on a phone call.

Signs you can pick up on a video call

• They ask you to repeat yourself, or say "haan?" several times in one call.
• The TV is loud in the background, or they turn it up while you're talking.
• They answer a slightly different question from the one you asked.
• They prefer texting, or pass the phone to someone else, where they used to chat for ages.
• They say people mumble, or that the phone line is bad, on every call.
• A neighbour or relative mentions they missed the doorbell or the phone ringing.
• They mention a ringing or buzzing in the ears.

How to book from wherever you are

• 1. Send a WhatsApp message to +91 7028722200 with your parent's town or village, a phone number for someone at home, and a good time of day. You can also call +91 9429690093.
• 2. We confirm the date and any charge. You get the next Goa visit date, and if a visit charge applies to that area, the amount on WhatsApp before you book.
• 3. Someone at home helps (optional). A relative, neighbour or caregiver being present makes the visit easier, but it isn't required.
• 4. The visit. The audiologist checks the ears, runs the 45-minute hearing test and explains the result to your parent in simple terms.
• 5. We call you. If you've asked, we phone you after the visit to go through the result and the options, so you aren't relying on a second-hand summary.
• 6. Decide together. If aids will help, your parent can try programmed demo aids at home. There is no pressure to decide on the day.

What a home visit can and can't do

A home visit covers the core assessment: a look inside the ears, a pure-tone hearing test on portable calibrated equipment, and a trial of hearing aids programmed to the result. Some specialised tests, such as BERA or balance testing, need a clinic or hospital setting, and a blocked ear or infection needs an ENT doctor. Hearing aids and Goa's humidity

Sea air and months of monsoon humidity are hard on small electronics. If your parent ends up with aids, a dry box every night, taking the aids off before the beach or a shower, and keeping spare batteries sealed will add years to their life.
