The Opn Play is Oticon's paediatric line — the child-focused version of the adult Opn family. It is built for growing ears, with tougher handling, a child-safe design and features aimed at learning and the classroom, rather than being an adult aid re-badged for kids.
It comes as a small receiver-in-canal (miniRITE) that tucks behind the ear, and as a sturdier behind-the-ear (BTE), including a more powerful BTE for stronger losses. Both connect to a soft earmould or dome; children are usually fitted with a custom earmould that is remade as they grow.
Across its styles the Opn Play spans a wide range of hearing loss. The receiver-in-canal suits milder-to-moderate losses, while the power behind-the-ear is designed to deliver clean amplification for children with severe-to-profound loss. The right power level is set from your child's audiogram.
The Opn Play runs on standard disposable zinc-air batteries and has a tamper-resistant battery door, so a young child cannot easily open it and reach the cell. It is not a rechargeable model — if a rechargeable children's aid matters to you, we will point you to the current generation instead.
It uses 2.4 GHz wireless for direct streaming from a compatible iPhone or iPad, and works with Oticon's ConnectClip remote microphone, the EduMic classroom microphone and FM systems that help a child hear the teacher over distance and noise. It is controlled from the Oticon app.
Rather than clamping down on everything except one talker, OpenSound Navigator keeps the whole 360° sound scene open and balances it many times a second. For a child this matters: children learn language and social cues incidentally, from voices and sounds around them, not only from whoever is directly in front.
