Your audiologist reads or plays two-syllable words and gradually lowers the volume until you can only manage about half of them. This point is your SRT. A useful side benefit is that the SRT should broadly agree with your pure tone results. When the two line up, it confirms the test was reliable and that your responses to the beeps were accurate. So the SRT is partly a measure and partly a cross-check.

Word recognition, the words you get right at a comfortable volume

The second part is the one that explains most day-to-day frustration. Here the words are played at a comfortable, clearly audible level, well above your threshold, and you simply repeat what you hear. Your audiologist counts how many you get right and records it as a score. This is your word recognition or speech discrimination score. The key idea is that loudness is no longer the problem here, because everything is easy to hear. Why you can hear but not understand
