That high-pitched whistle from your hearing aid is called feedback, and it happens when amplified sound leaks out of your ear, gets picked up again by the aid's microphone, and loops round and round. The most common reasons are a loose fit, the wrong dome or mould size, a build-up of ear wax, the volume set too high, or a cracked tube or receiver. Many cases are fixed at home in a couple of minutes, by reseating the aid properly, cleaning it, or turning the volume down a notch. When a home fix does not hold, your audiologist can refit the aid, make a new mould, or fine-tune the built-in feedback cancellation. Why does my hearing aid whistle?

Feedback is not a fault in the electronics most of the time. It is a physics problem: sound that should be travelling into your ear canal is escaping instead, and the microphone hears its own output. Anything that opens up a leak path, or pushes the volume higher than the fit can hold, can set it off. Here are the usual culprits we see in the clinic.

  • A loose fit. The aid or the earpiece is not seated fully in your ear, so sound slips out around the edge. This is by far the most common cause.
  • The wrong dome or mould size. If the dome is too small, or the mould has loosened as you have lost a little weight or your ear shape has changed, the seal is no longer tight.
  • Ear wax. A plug of wax deep in the canal bounces amplified sound straight back out to the microphone.
  • Volume too high. Pushing the volume up past what the fit can contain forces sound to leak and whistle.
  • A cracked or split tube, or a worn receiver wire. A tiny split in a behind-the-ear tube lets sound escape before it reaches your ear.
  • Something covering the ear. Cupping your hand near the aid, hugging someone, putting on a hat or scarf, or holding a phone flat against the ear reflects sound back and triggers a brief whistle. This kind is completely normal and harmless.

Quick fixes you can try at home

Work through these calmly, in order. None of them involves opening the device or poking anything inside it. Between them, they settle the large majority of whistling that wearers bring to us.

  • Reseat the aid. Take it out and put it back in slowly and firmly, making sure the dome or mould sits fully and snugly in your canal. A gentle wiggle as you push it home often stops the whistle instantly.
  • Turn the volume down a step. If you have crept the volume up recently, bring it back down and see if the feedback stops. If you genuinely need it louder without whistling, that is a fitting job for your audiologist.
  • Clean the aid. Brush the microphone and receiver openings and wipe the body with a dry cloth. A blocked or dirty aid is more prone to feedback.
  • Check the tube and dome. On a behind-the-ear aid, look for a split, twist or hardened, cracked tube, and check the dome is not torn or loose. A damaged part needs replacing, which is quick and inexpensive.
  • Rule out wax. If reseating and cleaning do not help, a wax plug in your ear is a likely suspect and needs a proper check, not a cotton bud.
  • Notice when it happens. If it only whistles when you cover the ear, hug someone or use the phone, there is nothing wrong. Hold the phone slightly angled rather than flat against the aid.

If the whistle only appears for a second when your hand, a pillow or a phone comes close to the ear and then goes away on its own, that is expected behaviour and needs no fix at all. Persistent whistling while the aid simply sits in your ear is the kind worth chasing down.

When ear wax is behind the whistle

Ear wax is one of the most common hidden causes of feedback, because a plug in the canal reflects amplified sound straight back to the microphone. The important thing is what not to do: please do not dig into your ear with a cotton bud, a pin, an ear cleaner or anything else, as this pushes wax deeper and can damage the eardrum. When the dome or mould is the problem

A good seal is what keeps sound where it belongs, so the earpiece matters as much as the aid itself. Domes come in different sizes and styles, and the right one for you can change over time as your ears and your hearing shift. Custom moulds can loosen after a year or two, or after weight change, and a loose mould is a classic feedback source. How modern feedback cancellation helps
